Fighting Health Care Inequities With Culturally Sensitive Treatment Strategies: A Message to Our Fellow Medical Students
As first-year medical students, we were first introduced to the concept of health disparities by discussing those that most impacted the patients in our region. Of course, we learned the buzzwords and the definitions behind public health and the factors that influence it. However, what stuck with me most was being able to apply those concepts to my own community.
Medical Student Perspective
Humility and Wonder

Subspecialty and Combined Training Careers
Women's Health
Women's Health focuses on developing expertise in health issues that are unique to women, are more common in women, or may present differently in women. Women's Health training programs are highly variable in focus but frequently provide more advanced expertise beyond that gained in usual internal medicine training.

IMIG Event Inspiration
Virtual Case Buster
The virtual “Case Buster” event was a favorite for both faculty and students at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University! The case was written by the ACP IMIG faculty advisor, faculty physicians, and student leaders. Shortly after people joined the large group, they were split up into breakout rooms of four students and one physician. Under the physician’s guidance, students worked through the case and came up with an organized diagnostic and treatment plan. Aside from discussing the medicine, students also addressed socioeconomic determinants of health and other barriers to accessing healthcare that were relevant to the case. Students appreciated how this event was low stakes, and afforded them the opportunity to interact with faculty physicians from across the state of Washington. See more IMIG event ideas.
Chapter Chatter
Missouri ACP created a video series featuring interviews of members from a variety of subspecialties within Internal Medicine. The interviews provide insight into their area of work, what took them down that path, and an inside look into their workday. Additionally, each video provides information on topics such as work-life balance, interviewing tips, what to look for in an employer, and some of the obstacles they have overcome in their careers. .

Test your medical knowledge each month with questions from The Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program® (MKSAP).
A 58-year-old woman is evaluated in the emergency department for sharp, nonradiating pain in the left lower quadrant that has persisted for 2 days. She reports no fever, diarrhea, or blood in stools and has not traveled recently. Her last colonoscopy, performed 1 year earlier, showed pandiverticulosis.
