Council of Student Members (CSM) Spotlight

Getting Involved in Student Leadership

Like many medical students, I did not have a specialty in mind when applying to medical school. And when school started, I was just grateful to have made it and terrified by the information that came blasting my way as if out of a fire hose. The first semester of school passed in a blur. Before I knew it, officer applications for student organizations started to drop.

Medical Student Perspective

Just Say YES!

My heart began to pound as I listened to the nurse explain that my Dad was placed on a ventilator earlier that morning and would not be needing the charger for his phone at this time. I listened to her explain to my Mom what being on a ventilator meant, but I was fixated on the words “He won't be needing that.” Those words made me feel like I would never speak to my Dad again or hear his voice.

Cannabis-Based Products for Chronic Pain. A Systematic Review; Cannabinoids for Chronic Pain: Translating Systematic Review Findings Into Clinical Action

Patients and physicians are interested in alternative treatments for chronic pain. Cannabis derivatives, or cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), may have analgesic properties. This systematic review investigated the benefits and harms of cannabinoids for treating chronic pain. The authors of the accompanying editorial discuss the limitations and strength of the available evidence and share their own advice for engaging with patients interested in using cannabis to treat chronic pain.

Annals of Internal Medicine is the premier internal medicine academic journal published by the ƹϵεapp (ACP). It is one of the most widely cited and influential specialty medical journals in the world.

Altered Mental Status in an Elderly Woman, Must Be the Urinary Tract Infection, or Is It?

The association between delirium and urinary tract infections (UTIs) in geriatric populations has been widely acknowledged by the healthcare community. However, alternative causes of cognitive deficits like hypercalcemia in elderly patients, may have been overlooked for conventional diagnoses.

Subspecialty and Combined Training Careers

Pulmonary Disease

Pulmonary medicine is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and management of disorders of the respiratory system, including the lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity, and chest wall. Although most common respiratory problems are treated by general internists and other specialty physicians, internists practicing pulmonary medicine (often referred to as “pulmonologists”) are frequently called upon to help diagnose unknown disorders and assist in managing difficult, unusual, or complicated diseases of the respiratory system.

See all the career pathways open to internal medicine doctors and explore a “day-in-the-life” of an IM specialist/subspecialist at the bottom of our “Medical Student Career Path page.

In the Clinic

Oktoberfest Blood Drive

In addition to organizing educational events for its members, some internal medicine interest groups also volunteer for public health initiatives in their school's community. IMIG members at Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Glendale hosted a blood drive with Vitalant in a local neighborhood during their Octoberfest block party. They successfully met their blood donor goal and provided blood products to local hospitals for life-saving transfusions. See more event ideas.
