ACP Bridges Perspectives Within Internal Medicine
(from the May 2018 ACP Internist)
ACP can serve as a virtual agora where the different professional branches can draw from their common root of internal medicine, and bridge differences by providing a space where members can talk through and think through different perspectives while remaining connected to patient care.
ACP Internist provides news and information for internists about the practice of medicine and reports on the policies, products, and activities of ACP.
My Kind of Medicine: Real Lives of Practicing Internists
Spotlight: Guillermo J. Ruiz Arguelles, MD, MACP
For Dr. Guillermo Ruiz Arguelles, a career as an internist and hematologist seemed like destiny. Thinking back, Dr. Ruiz amusingly admits that he “did not have very many choices to be anything other than a doctor.”
Medical Student Perspectives
And Who Teaches This?
The alarm clock goes off. It's 5 o’clock in the morning again. I'm late for the hospital. It's a cold morning. I do not want to get up. The alarm clock goes off again. It's 5:15. I must jump out of the bed and take a shower. My concentration focuses on getting there on time.
Why I Chose Medicine
When I was a child, my mom took me to an oriental medical clinic. The doctor took my pulse and said, “She has the pulse of a doctor.” My mother was surprised and asked him how he knew. He just said he was sure of it.

Subspecialty Careers
Nephrology
Nephrology is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidney. Because the kidney performs so many critical functions, nephrologists maintain expertise in primary kidney disorders, but also the management of the systemic consequences of kidney dysfunction.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects more than 20 million Americans, and over 500,000 have end-stage renal disease (ESRD) (1-2). The most common causes of CKD are diabetes and hypertension. CKD is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, cognitive dysfunction, hospitalization, and all-cause mortality.
