A Message from the Governor,
Minnesota ACP friends,
December catches me by surprise every year. I flip to that last calendar page and realize I only have four more weeks left in 2023. What a year this has been!
The Minnesota ACP chapter and its members have continued to excel in clinical medicine, education, and advocacy. This was highlighted at our recent annual scientific meeting. There we learned about work done in helping doctors communicate difficult information, we engaged in a robust discussion around artificial intelligence, and heard about the state of health in Minnesota from Commissioner Brooke Cunningham. We were also honored to have Shari Erickson from the national ACP office highlight our collective advocacy for improvements in the lives of patients, the community, and us as physicians. One of the highlights for me was being able to honor the work of members in our community who exemplify ACP values in clinical medicine, advocacy and leadership, through the awards ceremony. You can read about our 2023 award recipients in this newsletter. Also, if you know an internal medicine physician who is deserving of this honor let us know by now.
In addition to education and advocacy it was so joyful to get to meet so many of you in real life, to share stories, and experiences of what it's like to be an internal medicine doctor in these times. I left the meeting with a full heart and a mind buzzing with new ideas and connections that I hope will be able to manifest in 2024. For those of you that were able to attend, thank you for your participation! For those who missed it, we hope to see you next year.
This year has also been the launch of our where Dr. David Hilden and I get to explore the other hobbies and passions of our fellow IM doctors! So far, we have heard about IM physicians who do beekeeping, hunt for mushrooms, and use their creativity to create crafts as well as graphic novels. If you haven't had a chance to listen, click here to hear the latest episode. If you have an idea for a guest or you yourself would like to be interviewed, please let us know that as well.
As we start preparing ourselves to transition into 2024, I'm hoping to leave you with this quote which reminds me to remain open, to seek adventures, and lessons in the new year.
“And now we welcome the new year full of things that have never been” - Rainer Maria Wilke
With deep gratitude,
Tseganesh Selameab, MD, FAAP

In Memoriam
- David A. Berman, MD, FACP of Edina passed away. He practiced cardiology and internal medicine in Minnesota for 55 years.
- John B. Cardle, MD of Edina. He was 90 years old and had practiced internal medicine at the same practice for 40 years. He was active in the Edina Rotary, American Medical Association, ƹϵεapp, and the Hennepin County Medical Society
MN-ACP Member profile -Ellen Adams, MD, FACP
Where are you from? Duluth, MN
Where did you go to college, medical school, and residency? St. Olaf then University of Minnesota for med school and Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency
What are a couple of things you enjoy doing in your off-work time? Puzzles of any variety, running, playing with my 3-year-old son Noah
What do you enjoy most about being an internist? I primarily work in the hospital and I especially value advocating for people and/or helping people when they're at such a vulnerable point in their lives. Anyone who has ever dealt with a crisis in their lives learns about that vulnerable feeling and struggling to process everything that is coming at them. Lifting people up when they're at one of those low points is very gratifying.
Do you have a concern (or a few) about our profession? I think there are many distractions from caring for patients that lie in the logistics or finances of providing care and it is easy to feel hopeless or ineffectual but having amazing colleagues always reminds me of our collective work for the greater good.
